Cholera Outbreak

A few months back our medical team had to face a cholera outbreak. A patient died as a result of severe dehydration and hundreds were admitted to the hospital. A post mortem of the case suggested that the doctor who managed this patient initially should recognize the signs of severe dehydration.

What is Vibrio Cholerae ?Vibrio cholerae(also Kommabacillus) is a gram negative comma shaped bacterium with a polar flagellum that causes cholera in humans..V. cholerae and other species of the genus Vibrio belong to the gamma subdivision of the Proteobacteria.   There are two major biotypes of V. cholerae, classical and El Tor, and numerous other serogroups.

Nasty cholera under the microsope.......
